I would like to say a huge well-done to our team. This award is more about the team as a whole than it is for any individual or select few. From our managers who work extremely hard to our guys on the ground and out on our sites, this is their award"
HERE at the Todd Mudie Group we’re fair buzzing! Finalists last year, and winners this year, the mood among our team after picking up the prestigious Construction Industry Category at the Business Excellence Awards 2014 is happy, high-spirited — and humble.
Humble because this, as Group principal Todd Mudie says, “is a huge honour, especially for the guys. It shows how far we have come and how we have grown”.
“Humble also because we were up against some tough competition too and the fact we got across the line is huge for us in the future,” he says.
The awards, sponsored by Aoraki Development, Business and Tourism, were judged by entrepreneurship expert Dr Leith Oliver, Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend, Redesign managing-director Jo Pennycuick, and the managing-director of 100 per cent Pure New Zealand Honey, Steve Lyttle.
Todd has a special word of thanks to those judges and the organisers of the awards generally, but also has a special mention:
“I would like to especially say thank you to Janet Hogan and Raewyn Bell from Aoraki Development Business and Tourism who were instrumental in getting us back in this year and gave us the confidence to do so.”
Todd said that being judged winners by the Group’s peers and by judges of the calibre of the awards was a real honour.
The prestigious Construction Industry Category award for the Todd Mudie Group was a distinctive award for a distinctive trade.
“As far as I am aware, we are the only plastering group that has ever won the awards in the categories that they have got now,” Todd said.
But it’s his team of 36 across six TMG companies that he reserves the biggest plaudits for.
“I would like to say a huge well-done to our team. This award is more about the team as a whole than it is for any individual or select few.
“From our managers who work extremely hard to our guys on the ground and out on our sites this is their award.”
He said the awards offered opportunities to people who “usually fly under the radar”.
“Glenn (Group Operations Manager Glenn Cormack) and I like to fly under the radar so standing up there receiving the award was a bit awkward.
“But you look at it as a means of rewarding everyone in the Group who puts in so much effort to get the Group to where it is, so it’s a great thank you to them.
“Everyone works extremely hard and the fact we have been able to win it and be recognised in the industry and the fact that we are sub-contractors too, not contractors, that’s massive. We beat off two contractors,” Todd said.
And the award was also for the Todd Mudie Group’s clients, he said.
“This is really about our clients too. We have had enormous feedback. A lot of our builders have rung and congratulated us, and we have had bank managers call, and tons of emails etc.”
Todd said the Group was well positioned for future growth.
“Having Peter (Peter Henderson, Group Financial Manager) on board is big for us. Peter has come from the banking industry and has shown faith in us, which is a honour in itself.”
